Lebensmittelzusatzstoff, der als kalorienarmer Süßstoff, Stabilisator, Feuchthaltemittel, Emulgatorsalz (Chelatbildner), Volumenvermittler und Verdickungsmittel verwendet wird. Es kommt natürlicherweise in Früchten vor, wird aber industriell aus Glukose gewonnen. Es erscheint als E 420(i) – Sorbitol oder E 420(ii) – Sorbitolsirup. Es wird auch als Trägerstoff für andere Lebensmittelzusatzstoffe verwendet.
