Homemade Chocolate Milk: Real Cocoa, No Additives
Packaged chocolate milk often contains carrageenan (E407) as a stabilizer, artificial flavors, and more added sugar than a can of soda. This homemade version uses real cocoa powder and a touch of honey — ready in under 2 minutes.

- Yield
- 1 glass (240ml)
Ingredients
- Per serving (1 glass):
- 1 cup whole milk or plant-based milk
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1–2 teaspoons honey, maple syrup, or sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Pinch of salt (optional, enhances chocolate flavor)
Steps
In a small bowl or mug, combine cocoa powder and sweetener.
Add 2 tablespoons of warm milk and stir until the cocoa is fully dissolved into a smooth paste — this prevents lumps.
Pour in the remaining cold milk and stir well.
Add vanilla extract and a pinch of salt if using.
Taste and adjust sweetness.
Serve immediately over ice for cold chocolate milk, or warm gently on the stovetop for hot cocoa.
For a batch (4 servings): multiply all ingredients by 4, mix the cocoa paste with warm milk first, then add cold milk. Store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Shake before serving.
Why Make Your Own Chocolate Milk
Carrageenan (E407) is a common stabilizer in packaged chocolate milk that has been the subject of ongoing research regarding gut health. Artificial flavors and high-fructose corn syrup are also standard. A homemade version uses cocoa powder — which provides antioxidants — and lets you control the sweetness level.
Tips and Variations
Dutch-process cocoa gives a smoother, less bitter flavor than natural cocoa. For a richer version, use 2% or whole milk. For a dairy-free version, oat milk or almond milk work well — oat milk gives the creamiest result. Add a pinch of cinnamon for a Mexican hot chocolate flavor. For a protein boost, blend in a tablespoon of nut butter.
How This Compares to Packaged Chocolate Milk
A typical packaged chocolate milk lists sugar as the second ingredient, followed by cocoa, carrageenan, and artificial flavors. A single serving can contain 25–30g of sugar. This recipe uses 1–2 teaspoons of honey (4–8g of sugar) and no stabilizers or artificial flavors. The trade-off is that it requires 2 minutes of preparation.
