How to read a food label: a beginner's guide

A food label has two essential sections: the ingredient list and the nutrition table.

The ingredient list

Ingredients are listed from the most abundant to the least. If sugar is in first or second place, the product is high in sugar.

The nutrition table

Look for the values per 100 g and per serving. Compare the declared serving with how much you actually eat.

E-numbers and allergens

E-numbers are additives; you can look any of them up in the additive checker. Allergens such as gluten, milk and eggs must be clearly highlighted.

Scan instead of reading by hand

The BioBrief app takes a photo of the label and explains the ingredients in plain language.
